I was making the photo shoot with Daniel Flores Cabezas, who lives in Viña del Mar, Chile, and he had invited to this session to other punk buddies of his, and we went down to a local Valparaíso's beach. It was February 26th, 2010, 5:20pm approx. We never figured out that after this session along the Valparaíso Promenade, a big and destructive 8.8 magnitude on the Richter scale earthquake and tsunami would hit Central and Southern Chile just 10 hours later. Luckily, none of the boys involved in the project were injured or dead in the February 27th, 2010 earthquake.

I was a curious thing with this visual. When I requested for four Punk guys on FB to make this photo, I never expected to come more than fifteen people in front of La Moneda, Chile's Government Palace building. It was something that I didn't expect to happen, if I just needed four people. Some of them even came with their kids, which was interesting, but it was clearly something that I didn't need that day.
Well, the thing was that the policemen who guard the Government Palace, felt themselves in alert to see so many "rebels against the Establishment" in the frontis. One of the policemen came to ask us why such gathering. I had to explain that I just wanted to carry out a serious photograph with the Punk boys and I think they understood, although they never kept their eyes off of us. Finally, I had to choose only the four punks that would be in the shot, and this is the result.

It was a very cold winter afternoon when we headed to this location by the railtracks. I had found days earlier, this old and rain-wetted sofa and vehicle tires to add them to the visual that I wanted to make in the middle of the tracks, and it turned out as planned, considering that the trains pass by each moment everyday.

Originally, the idea of photo shooting on the bed of the Santiago's Mapocho River (the long dark troubled-water river that runs the whole city) was destined to another visual project I had in mind, and originally to another subject too. But, the chance of working with Ismael (Devasted Street Punk) and Fernando Milla Bramilla, whom I had worked with them separatedly before, came out as fast as I wanted to go down to the brink of marginality. So, I took the Boys to this fantastic place (where I think no one would easily do down to take a picture, or whatever) and we began with the shooting. We spent several hours down the river working but I think I was the happiest guy to be down there in the brink of Society's marginality for the first time having fun and making this session.

I had fun a lot and we made a good job. Thanks guys.

Gracias muchachos.

To make this vintage punk music scene, I was inspired by the early 1980's wave punk band Blondie's song "One Way Or Another".

We headed to some specific underground-style urban locations to carry out these photos. I loved the shots where Punk Alvaro, sitting leg-crossed, reads a Rolling Stone magazine with a radio close to him and the writings on the wall behind; and the shots of the graffitti drawings on an old, abandoned, filthy and foul-smelling public elevator to make it look like a 1980's New York punk scene...... but it's here in Santiago, Chile.

Thanks to all those who took part in this project and gave their support, cooperation, time and enthusiasm. Thanks a lot.

King For A Day / Rey Por Un Día

I took the name of "King For A Day" to this project from a song by the 1980s British New Wave group Thompson Twins. I listened to it a couple of times and I was fascinated with the music and words, and I found out that some visual idea would come up out of my mind and, this is what finally turned out. Something simple but reflexive at the same time, depending on how it is viewed.
And once again, and for the second time, I made this project on 1st of May, Labor Day. I worked on this same date three years ago when I embarked on the "Chasin' The Wind" project (2009) on a beach as well, just like in this one.
